Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC)

Recycled Aggregate is the aggregate obtained from crushing demolished construction waste into smaller portions. These recycled aggregates are used in the construction replacing partly natural aggregates thus contributing to sustainable Civil Engineering.

Waste rubber is being used in several applications of Civil Engineering. One such application is in concrete replacing some part of fine aggregates with fine granules of rubber (scrap rubber from tyres). This concrete is called crumb rubber concrete(CRC) because of its usage of crumb rubber i.e the fine granules of grinded scrap rubber tyres.

when compared to traditional concrete, this concrete has got high ductility, energy dissipation and damping ratio. But, CRC has got low compressive strength when compared to conventional concrete. This concrete is an environment- friendly material since it is using waste rubber in place of natural resource i.e aggregates.

Concrete containing self-sensing structural materials in it is a smart concrete. Smart Concrete is obtained from composites of concrete and carbon NanoTube. Under applied deformations, this smart concrete senses the variations in the properties of the concrete.  In large Reinforced Concrete members, smart concrete strain members are inserted.

Prof. Hiroaki Yanagida (University of Tokyo) developed self-testing concrete by using carbon fibres and glass in 1992.

Not just Self-sensing concrete, there are other concrete which can coined as Smart concrete like Self-healing concrete.

As we are building more and more structures everyday, there is a great need for eco-friendly techniques of retrofitting old and damaged structures once the structures approach their lifetime.

IRS technique

Conventionally, Externally Bonded (EB) Technique is used to retrofit Reinforced Concrete beams/other members of damaged or old structures. This technique uses Steel plates or Fiber Reinforced Polymer as strengthening materials. In this method, the deteriorated concrete is removed and corrosion inhibitor is applied on reinforced bars which are present internally. Then cover concrete is restored followed by adding strengthening systems.

But, this process is not Environmental friendly. An alternate method of retrofitting RC members is being studied by various researchers from past 2-3 years. This method uses stainless steel fabric in the cover concrete and Steel Reinforced Geopolymeric Matrix (SRGM).

Composites

Meaning: Newly developed construction material by using various materials. They may be synthetic or from natural resources. These composites are used in various applications of construction.

Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Aerated Concrete
Steel Reinforced Geopolymeric Matrix (SRGM)
